The dish name’s root word is bayabas (guava fruit) and that points to the fact that ripe guavas are the definitive ingredient in the cooking method binayabasan.
Binayabasan na Hipon at Alimango literally means “Shrimp and Crabs That Have Been Guavaed” — meaning they’ve been cooked with guavas.
In the featured photo above, although the guavas aren’t visible, it is pork that is that main ingredient that’s binayabasan.
